The members of Beakanyang organisation on Saturday 30th August 2008 took part in a massive weeding exercise on the watermelon farm of their Secretary General, Mr. Nfamara Jawneh.

The farm, measuring 2.5 hectare is located at Jambur village in Kombo South, Western Region.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Tumani Danjo, president of Beakanyang, expressed their pleasure in participating in the exercise. " I must emphasise that we are not helping Jawneh but rather ourselves, because we all know that a good percentage of the proceeds of this farm goes to helping the needy, especially orphans. He is making a lot of sacrifices for Beaknyang thus the need for us to support him in his farming activities," he said. "I would also like to thank the members of the Young Journalists Association of The Gambia who also pledged to come here but were unable to come," he stated.

For his part, Mr. Nfamara Jawneh, secretary general of Beakanyang, thanked the volunteers for their support. "I am very pleased today with the assistance of the volunteers. You can see what they have done is great because if I had to do this alone it will take me weeks to do so. I have been cultivating this farm for the past three years but this is the first time I have such a large number of volunteers helping me," he said. He promised that he will continue to share the proceeds of his farm with the less privileged and needy in the society especially orphans. " I have the conviction that if every Gambian youth goes back to the farm this country can attain food self-sufficiency," he stated. Farming, he said, only requires dedication, hard work and some investment.

Others speakers include Sidia Yaffa, assistant farm manager, and Abdou Touray, treasurer, Beakanyang Kombo Chapter.
