Track and Field Coach Gets Scholarship

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Mam Keyweh Ceesay, a Gambian track and field coach, has been selected to undergo a five months advanced coaching course by the German Government through Gunter Langer a German sport development expert. Gunter Langer further revealed that another track and field coach would be given one-year scholarship in due course.

This selection followed after the end of two workshops that was conducted by the German track and field specialist in strategic development and strength training which involved many sports administrators.

While speaking at the closing ceremony of this training at the National Olympic House, Mr. Langer said that in a bid to create sports excellence and medal winning athletes in the Gambia, physical education should become compulsory in schools to provide training to  athletes while they are young.

SOS Shriff Gomez, in his closing remarks, was thankful to the German Government for making this training possible. He said that this training has provided a new dimension in our way in which we approach sports and sports development in a way that is fancied by all Gambians.

"The reaction from the participants was that they are ready to implement what they have learnt," he continued.

"Using strategic thinking in sport in a holistic way makes people to know their role and responsibility by bringing them as partners and put up a strategic plan in developing sport," SOS Gomez concluded.

Sheikh Tijan Faye, a former national athlete, adduced that Gunter Lange has a lot of information that have been shared with the participants that better the standard of our coaches and sport administrators.

Mr. Faye paid homage to the ministry, German Government and the Gambian National Olympic Committee for organizing the seminar.
