Three Days on, Arrested Journalists Still Detained

Following their call and subsequent detention since last Monday, Mr. Pap Saine, Co-publisher and Managing Editor of the Point, together with Mr. Sam Sarr, Editor of Foroyaa and five other Gambian journalists were at the time of going to press still in detention at the headquarters of the National Intelligence Agency in Banjul.

The detainees, which also include Mr. Ebrima Sawaneh, News Editor of the Point, Mrs. Sarata Jabbi-Dibba, Vice- President of the Gambia Press Union, Mr. Pa Modou Faal, Treasurer, Mr. Emil Touray, Secretary-General of the Gambia Press Union and Abubacarr Saidykhan, a reporter with Foroyaa, were all called to report to the NIA Headquarters in Banjul for questioning where they are said to be detained since then.

As at now, no charges has been brought against the seven journalists and no official information has been made available to this paper as to the reason(s) for their continued detention.

They are been denied access by family members and colleagues.
