Passenger fined $5,000 for interfering with flight crew members

Principal Magistrate Abeke of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court yesterday convicted and sentenced one Ebrima Manneh to a fine of $5,000 or its equivalent in dalasis in default to serve two years in prison.

Ebrima Manneh pleaded guilty to the charge of interfering with the crew members by endangering the safety or jeopardizing life while on board the aircraft.

According to the particulars of offence, the accused person on 21st February 2011 at Banjul International Airport, while on board flight No: JK 203, a Spanish Airline flight from Barcelona to Banjul, that was at the time 3800 feet high in the sky, displayed by insulting the crew members and passengers on board the said flight.

The prosecuting officer, 1st Class 2259 Ceesay, presented the facts of the case as per the charge sheet, which the convict accepted as true and correct.

In his plea of mitigation, the convict begged the court to temper justice with mercy, adding that he is a family man with two wives and children.

He added that while in the flight, he could not control himself as he was drunk at the time, lost control of himself and started insulting everybody on the flight.
