GTB hands over overhead tourist taxi lights

The Gambia Tourism Board, GTB, on Wednesday handed over overhead tourist taxi lights to tourism authorities, at a ceremony held at the Tourist Security Unit in Senegambia.

The official handing over ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Gambia Tourism Board, as well as senior security officers.

The taxi lights are meant for those tourist taxis that have gone through and passed the recent Motor Ordinance Test.

Speaking shortly after the handing over of the overhead lights, Benjamin Roberts, Director General of Gambia Tourism Board thanked all those who have attended the ceremony. He said the move has started with the consultation from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture; and the Gambia Hotel Association.

The Director added that the initiative will help a lot, especially when it comes to the area of security.

“We need to improve the standard of tourist taxi in this country noting that with the collaboration of the GTB, Tourist Taxi Association and the TSU will make the work very easy,” he said.

Bubacarr Camara also from the Gambia Tourism Board, said “we are here to witness the handing over of overhead tourist taxi lights to tourist taxis that have undergone a vigorous testing exercise, called Motor Ordinance Test, MOT, carried out by the Police Testing Unit. The testing has been going on since the last two months and over 500 vehicle that have come forward for the testing only 375 tourist taxis were successful.”

Other speakers included Abdoulie Badjie, Commissioner of Police Transport Unit and President of Tourists Taxi Association.
