Gambia in Bissau for sub-regional Paralympic competition

After what was a long travel, the Gambian delegation of Paralympians under The Gambia National Paralympic Committee (GNPC) early Tuesday morning safely arrived in the Guinean capital city of Bissau where they are to take part in a maiden sub-regional international sporting competition involving Paralympians.

The Gambia, Senegal and hosts Guinea Bissau will be competing in different sporting disciplines including basketball, athletics and volleyball among others.

However, Guinea Conakry, who were also expected to take part in the competition, did not make it to Bissau.

The Gambian delegation headed by Sulayman Colley, President of GNPC comprises basketball and athletic teams.

At the time of going to press on Tuesday, The Gambia Basketball team was preparing to take on the hosts Guinea Bissau who earlier lost 7-6 to Senegal in an intriguing game played at the Amilcar Cabral University indoor basketball court.

The athletic team will also take to the tracks possibly today (Wednesday) and the athletes are confident of victory. The spirit among the athletes was very much high at the time of filing this report.

The event was preceded with a short opening ceremony characterised by march-past by participating countries before officials from Bissau gave remarks to laud the initiative of staging the event, saying Bissau is honoured to host the maiden edition.

The Gambia’s basketball team comprises Isatou Nyang, Ebrima Mbye, Yusupha Trawally, Musa Sonko, Malang Tamba, Sanu Jallow, Modou Gamo, Salifu Kujabi, Alie Kah, Ebrima Ceesay, Lamin Gibba and Demba Jarju.

The athletic team comprises Malang Tamba, Demba Jarju, Salifu Kujabi and Alie Kah. And the coaches are Ebrima Carvalho and Sainey Colley.
