The All Africa Games kick off in Congo Brazzaville this weekend. Fifty-four African countries are expected to attend the two-week sporting event.

The event will mark the 50th anniversary of the games. Brazzaville hosted the first-ever All-Africa Games in 1965. Preparations have included building a new sports infrastructure and a Games village in Kintele.

Gambia’s Beach volleyball kings Malick Jammeh and Babucarr Jarra and the indoor team are aiming for more glory at the All-Africa Volleyball contest.  The Games are scheduled for September 4-19 in Congo-Brazzaville.

The beach volleyball duo are in concentrated training at Ocean Bay beaches with their coach Alagie Babou Joof.

Beach volleyball captain Malick Jammeh told volleyball Gambia that they want to be among the best teams in Africa.

“We both know that great volleyball nations will converge in Brazzaville for the games and this is our first appearance in continental stage,” Jammeh said. “We will give our best; we aim to raise the flag of our nation by finishing among the best three nations in Africa,”

The 25-year-old Zone II silver medalist star added: “We have been training a lot for the past 3 months since we returned from the qualifiers and this has given us the poise of winning the competition; however we must be ready, fit, focus and we won’t take anything for granted.”

The Gambia beach volleyball team’s participation is fully funded by the President of FIVB, Dr Ary S. Graca, while the indoor is airlifted by the Government of The Gambia.
