The Captain of the senior national team, the Scorpions Edirisa Sonko, has urged his teammates to remain focussed on the upcoming games of the World and African Cup qualifiers.
Edi made this remarks in and interview he had with reporters yesterday, during the Scorpions training session at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
" First of all our ability and hunger to do anything for our country is one of the things we have to be confident of coupled with our young players coming up from the U20's, we have seen a good example from our last game. Every one is confident and comfortable with the performances and we are urging the general public to pray and give us their support as they used to do," he said adding that by the help of God they will deliver.
He further said that the Gambian team is not under any pressure as they are seen as the underdogs in group six fixtures. He said, "we are not under pressure as Senegal, and Algeria are both in the same group."
Sonko also lamented the absence of the 5 players facing suspension after our game with Algeria last year. He said, "they are key members of the team but we have a group that is large and full of talented players. We assure the public that this will not affect us as we have a group of youngsters who can fill those positions. Regarding the coaching staff we have no problem with that and it will not affect us we just started it and we going to end it".
In his remarks Abdou Jammeh alias "T Boy" also expressed the belief that hopes are high in the team.
"We have to win all of our games, we have the team that can do it but all we need to do is to be focused which is very important," he said.
Meanwhile the players that were expected in Banjul have finally arrived and reported at the Scorpions training camp. The players are Edirisa Sonko, Dawda Bah, Yankuba Ceesay (Mal) Tijan Jaiteh, Njogu Demba, Demba Savage, Abdoulie Mansaly (Ken) Abdou Jammeh alias "T Boy". Abdoulie Corr ( paco) is expected in Banjul on Sunday.
The team is expected to leave Banjul tomorrow Friday 30th May 2008 at 8.30am for Monrovia, for their World and African cup qualifiers.
