The Gambia Teachers' Union Co-operative Credit Union (GTUCCU) recently inaugurated its newly built headquarters situated in Kanifing.

Principally, the members of the GTUCCU financed the new office complex, the foundation stone of which was laid two years ago.

In her inaugural statement, Hon. Fatou Lamin Faye, Secretary of State for Basic and Secondary Education, described the event as yet another milestone in the development of teachers and teachers welfare in the Gambia.

According to her, the inauguration is such a remarkable success in the history of Gambian teachers, adding that it will no doubt restore teachers confidence, revive public esteem and provide the means for teachers to ensure comfort through affordable micro-credit.

Secy Faye also reiterated government's commitment to the cause of teachers and assured that her department will be with teachers through out as they continue to address the welfare of teachers.

For his part, Mr. Baboucarr Jeng, General Manager of (NACCUG), explained that poverty is arguably the most challenging economic problem of the generation. He noted that reports have shown that of the world's population, 1.2 million are living in extreme poverty.

According to him, it can be further argued that credit unions are the best tools to reduce world's poverty.

He pointed out that today, most teachers own cars, pay their children's school fees, build modern houses and pursue higher education all thanks the credit union's loan.
