Abdoulie Sonko Treason Trial Nears Climax

africa » gambia » banjul
Friday, April 18, 2008

The long-drawn-out treason trial against Abdoulie Sonko, one of the suspects of the 1996 Farafeni attack, is about to enter another crucial phase as the defence is expected to open their case on the next adjourned date.

The State Counsel, Maleywood, yesterday informed the court that the prosecution had rested their case and they are not calling any witnesses.

Defence counsel Lawyer Camara applied for an adjournment to enable photocopy and study of records of proceedings with a view to preparing his defence.

It will be recalled that the accused, Abdoulie Sonko, was arrested and charged with treason as he was alleged to have taken part in the 1996 Farafenni military barracks attack.

The case was presided over by Justice Yemoa of the Banjul High Court.

The case continues on the 28th of April 2008.
