Wrestling Gains Popularity at Nayconf

africa » gambia
Tuesday, December 23, 2008

While events unfold at the bi-annual youth festival fondly called Nayconf, last weekend, an elastic euphoria stormed the Farafenni Lower Basic School to watch Banjul City clash with Kanifing Municipality wrestlers. Their drum beaters enlivened the event much to the delight of the spectators.

In the first bout, Assan Joof of Banjul defeated Ousman Jammeh of Kanifing Municipality 4 points to nil. Alieu Charren of Banjul also defeated his opponent Landing Jarju by 4 points to nil.

The final was fought between Boto Senegal of Banjul and Alieu Gaindeh of Kanifing Municipality. The combat ended in a 2 all draw as each of them won a bout.

However, the drawn game between Boto Senegal and Alieu Gandeh is rescheduled before Ousman Jammeh and Landing Jarju will take on the wrestlers from N.B.R to know who qualifies for the final.

Wrestling is one of the most popular traditional sporting events as part of the activities to be competed in Farafenni. According to our reporter this game in particular drew a large number of spectators to cheer themselves with one of the oldest cultural activities in our sporting calendar.
