Savage’s Honka Hunt for Third League Cup Title

(Friday 3rd February 2012 issue)
FC Honka’s midfielder and Gambia international Demba Savage is looking forward to his club’s third trophy as the 2012 Finnish League Cup opens on Saturday.

Honka won two consecutive league cup titles and will battle away against last season’s double champions, HJK Helsinki, who also have the same record of wins in the Finnish league cup.

Savage has a record of 71 appearances for Honka since joining them in 2008. He has scored a total of 24 goals 15 of which were recorded last season. The hot and very dangerous pusher, as he is described on club’s website fchonka, rose last season as one of the club’s largest home crowd favourite.

The Gambian international and Honka’s valuable player, set for another successful season, has tipped his side  Honka, HJK and Inter Turku as the top three favourites for the 2012 Finnish Veikkausliiga title.

The 23-year-old Gambian attacker and teammates are aware of the tough challenge ahead of them in Saturday’s clash but the club has a little to worry about after having a handful of new young players for the task, according to fchonka.com.

Honka will later meet MYPA on Friday 10 February before taking on Lahti on Tuesday 14 February. Honka’s return leg against HJK will be played on 17 February at home.

HJK Helsinki, former club of Gambia international Dawda Bah who moved to Bundesliga side Augsburg last September, had a successful ending last season.

The forward signed a two-year deal with the team making his debut in Germany’s top flight.

The 27-year-old, who left HJK Helsinki, the Finnish club he joined in 2007, is currently nursing a knee injury he picked during a training session last year, after making his first appearance for the side.
