africa » gambia
Friday, January 23, 2009

Jorg Koause, a German national, is standing trial before Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of Brikama Court on two counts of sedition.

Count one of the charge sheet stated that on or about the 15th day of January 2009 along the coastal highway in the Western Region, the accused acted in a manner that could bring discontent or disaffection amongst the inhabitants of The Gambia by using remarks considered to be bad against the security and people of the Gambia.

Count two also further intimated that on the same day at the same place, the accused person used abusive and insulting words that intended to provoke or breach the peace, thereby committing an offence. The accused pleaded guilty to both counts.

The presiding Magistrate convicted and sentenced Mr. Koause to a fine of D5000, 00 in default to serve 1-year imprisonment.
