One Muhammed Christopher, a 53 year-old British national commonly known as Mr Brikama on Monday 24th August distributed one hundred pairs of shoes and clothes to the needy in Brikama as his Ramadan gift.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Christopher said that he has been in the Gambia as a tourist since 1988. He said since then, he has been extending a helping hand to the needy parents and their children.
According to him, he is currently sponsoring one thousand five hundred students yearly. Among them, he stated two students namely Abdoulie Ceesay and Isatou Sanneh were in the UK studying medicine and law. He added that he spent one million dalasis on them per year.
Mr Christopher further stated that helping poor parents and their children is very important because a person, who cannot afford anything for himself need to be assisted. He said helping the poor has no benefit for him but for the entire country, adding that he would continue helping the poor as long as he can.
He also noted that by September 2009, he would be giving out free scholarships to the poor and needy.
