Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Justice Mabel Maame Agyemang of the Banjul High Court on Monday ruled that the accused Abdoulie Sonko, one of the alleged Farefenni Military camp attackers, has a case to answer in all the nine counts preferred against him.

Delivering a ruling on a no-case submission made by the defence counsel, Lamin Camara, Justice Agyemang stated that the accused Abdoulie Sonko is charged with nine counts of criminal offences of which include three counts of treason and six counts of murder. She said in 1996 a group of armed attackers attacked the Army Military Camp, which led to the dead of some military officers.

Justice Mabel Maame Agyemang further stated that according to the evidence of the prosecution witnesses some attackers were arrested while others escaped including the accused person. She added that the accused was among those who escaped at the time of the attack and, according to the prosecution witnesses, was arrested by military intelligence and the National Intelligence Agency in Banjul. She said at the end of the prosecution case, the defence submitted a no-case to answer, adding that after reviewing the entire range of evidence before the court, the court is satisfied that a prima-facie has been made out against the accused person by the prosecution. "The no -case of the defence is hereby dismissed and the accused is called to enter into his defence," she concluded.
