Guinea Bissau Needs Support - President Jammeh

The president, Yahya Jammeh, has said that the sister Republic of Guinea-Bissau needs the support of all genuine Africans in its post conflict reconstruction efforts. Adding that, particularly Gambians who, despite hardship in that country, continue to live there peacefully.

The Gambian leader went on a four-day working visit to Bissau where he visited various regions of that country.

President Jammeh made these remarks to GRTS at the airport last Friday upon his return from Bissau.

According to him, Bissau Guineans are in a very difficult situation and thus need spiritual, moral and financial support.

He said that despite fact that the country has been divided, they could only get out of abject poverty if they reconcile. " Is not a poor country is just unfortunate that for five years they have been fighting and killing each other," he said.

President Jammeh added that in terms of natural resources Guinea-Bissau is far ahead of The Gambia. "In terms of fisheries they have more fish stocks than The Gambia, they have timber in abundance and land mark. In terms of agriculture they have a greater potential than The Gambia," he said.

He added, "the two countries have a long standing comprehensive technical cooperation agreement only it has been dormant almost for past seven years. The visit was meant to revive it and also to further strengthen the relationship."
