Fatou Mbye is the latest female coach that finds herself coaching in The Gambia Football Association Division two league. She is the Head Coach of Jamcity United, a team that is making its debut appearance in the national league this year.
Aware of the challenge and task that awaits her, the young coach will be taking her first coaching role with this second division team against a well experienced side, Kinteh's United, this Friday at the Real football field, in the opening matches of the 2007/8 GFA female league.
She said, " Jamcity is a team that was formed five years ago but it was only competing at local level. Taking up this role is very challenging as it is my first task of coaching a team. I have confidence in my players who are training hard to ensure that we get desired results," she explained.
"We will try to ensure that we will avoid defeat in all of our matches. We intend to at least pick up a point in every match. Our main target is to enter into the second division by next year, but as for now we would like to familiarise ourselves in the second division and gain a little bit of experience," coach Mbye explained.
She encouraged fellow women to join in the field of sports and not to shy away from responsibilities. " Sports is for both men and women so we need to play the game or take part in its administration," she said.
She was part of a group of female coaches that went through training in the first Gambia Football Association and FIFA Coaching course and has gained enough knowledge to lead the girls to their first league appearance on Friday June 27th 2008.
