Veterans Football Tournament Reaches Semis

africa » gambia
Friday, July 24, 2009

In the quarter-finals of the on-going Sub-regional veterans football tournament, Senegal vanquished Sierra Leone by a lone goal scored as early as the 7th minute of the first half. Ibrihim Seck (no- 9) formerly of Etics FC and Senegal national team, took advantage of a cross from team mate Yunus Diop (no-11), formerly of Rail FC and Senegal national team to find the back of the Sierra Leonean net in a slow drive that the Sierra Leonean defenders failed to clear.

On two occasions, Sierra Leone missed clear goal scoring opportunities, one of them virtually a forgone conclusion when the Sierra Leonean(no- 8) missed and open goal at close range.

It was an unfortunate day for Sierra Leone as they could not capitalise on the Senegalese red card received in the first half of the match. Team managers Albert Carlos Conteh (Sierra Leone) and Sulayman Ndiaye (Senegal) both accepted the result in good sporting spirit.

In the second match, Senegal (Dakar team) downed Mauritania 2-1 in a thrilling and balance encounter.

Mauritania lost from the second goal when their goal keeper kicked the air instead of the ball.

There were no matches on Wednseday July 22nd which was reserved by the teams to attend the July 22nd parade. The semi-finals were therefore scheduled for Thursday 23rd July when the Gambia will meet Senegal. The finals of the tournament are scheduled for Friday 24th July 2009, at the Independence Stadium, at 5p.m, with the 3rd place match booked for 3p.m at the same venue.
