Theft convict bags five years in prison

The Brikama Magistrates’ Court recently convicted and sentenced one Malang Sanyang to five years in prison with hard labour for a charge of stealing by clerk or servant.

According to the facts of the case as narrated by the prosecution officer, Inspector Fadera, the incident took place on 14 October 2011, at the African Mineral Mining Company at Sanyang village.

He said the convicted person, Malang Sanyang, was an employee of the said company, where he stole 8 metres of electrical cable.

He added that the matter was later reported to the overall boss, who also forwarded the matter to the Sanyang Police Station.

Still narrating, he told the court that during interrogation, the convict confessed stealing the said electrical cable and sold it to the unknown person.

He said the convict also confessed that this was the third time he was stealing from the company and according to the complainant, 320 metres in total of electrical cable was stolen. Out of these, he added, only 8 metres were recovered.

In his plea of mitigation, the convicted person, Malang Sanyang, begged the court to temper justice with mercy, as he is a family man.
