Momodou Jallow, a marabout, was Monday convicted and sentenced by Principal Magistrate Dayo M. Small of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court, for obtaining money by false pretence.

Delivering his judgement, the principal magistrate told the court that the accused was brought before the court and alleged to have obtained money by false pretence, a charge he had denied.

He said the trial continued and the prosecution called three witnesses who all confirmed that the accused person received the money amounted to D5,775 from the complainant on the agreement that he was going to cure her, which he failed to do.

According to the magistrate, the accused person did not convince the court because he did not say anything which would confirm he was innocent.

The prosecutor had proved his case beyond reasonable doubt, he said.

The accused person begged the court to temper justice with mercy, as he had eight children and a wife.

He was convicted and sentenced to 1-year imprisonment and was also ordered to compensate the complainant with one hundred and seventy-five thousand dalasis, in default to serve another 1-year imprisonment.
