Momodou Lamin Njie, a Police officer attached to the Banjul Police Station was yesterday convicted by the Banjul Magistrates' Court for aiding a detainee to escape.

According to the particulars of the offence, on 22nd August 2008 at Banjul Police. the convict aided a detainee Modou Bah to escape from lawful custody.

In his judgement, the presiding Magistrate Lamin George stated that looking at the evidence as a whole, he found the prosecution witnesses creditable and consistent. He said the convict did not challenge the evidence of PW1, adding the court found that the convict had indeed helped and given assistance to Modou Bah to escape.

Magistrate Lamin George further stated that the court found that the prosecution had proven their case against the convict beyond all reasonable doubt, and accordingly convicted the accused person for aiding Modou Bah who was a detainee under lawful custody to escape as charged. He added that upon conviction and after hearing the convict's plea of mitigation he thereby cautioned and discharged the convict having regard to his 20 years service, a first offender, and was remorseful.
