Out-of-form GPA face Gamtel in crucial Super Cup Final

The out-of-form Peter Bonu Johnson tutored-side Gambia Ports Authority will begin the quest for another silverware, as they prepare to come face to face with Gamtel in a crucial 2010-11 Gambia Football Association’s super cup final slated for Saturday at the rejuvenated D9.6 million KG5 Mini-Stadium in Banjul.

The ferry boys who are set to start the defence of their last year's GFA division one league crowned with a crunch opener against Africell on Wednesday, face an uphill task of laying their hands on the super cup accolade against the telecommunication boys, Gamtel, whose performance in the country's top tier football league over the last couple of years has been satisfactory.

The two sides will travel to the capital city to fight for the super cup title in what is expected to provide a fantastic atmosphere for a teaming number of travelling fans who are looking forward to an excellent curtain raiser final.

For the Gambia Ports Authority, they will enter Saturday's highly anticipated final on the back of an unconvincing run of form following their disappointing exit from the CAF Champions League campaign.

They have blown away a better if not the best chance to advance to the next stage of the CAF club champions league needing a 1-nil win in their own backyard to be guaranteed a place in the second stage of the Champions league.

But instead they suffered a shocking early elimination at the hands of their neighbours, Jaraaf of Senegal, who sent them parking thanks to a 3-1 aggregate win in a rather embarrassing return-leg tie in Banjul recently amid angry reactions from the disappointed Gambian fans.

Since that dismal displayed against Jaraaf few weeks ago, Bonu and his charges have been taking part in a series of local test matches as they continue with their preparations ahead of the league.

Their latest preparatory test match before the weekend's clash came against the military boys, Armed Forces, who hammered them 3-1 to enjoy a thrashing friendly game victory courtesy of goals from Babucarr Badjan, Modou Gaye and Kabba Jobe at the Father Gough Sports complex in Manjai, which is currently at the centre of a dispute over who will look after the rehabilitated venue.

The super cup final or curtain raiser marks the beginning of a new Gambia Football Association division one league season for 2010-2011.
