africa » gambia
Monday, March 02, 2009

The Gambia female side will for the first time engage in an international friendly match with Guinea Bissau on Sunday March 8th 2009 in Bissau. The friendly is part of activities marking the country's women's week.

27 players drawn from The Gambia Football Association female league, headed by Coach Buba Jallow, are currently training at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

According to Des Samba Mbenga, chairman of The Gambia Football Association committee on female football, the friendly came into being following an invitation sent from their Guinean counterparts.

He pointed out that 20 players out of the number currently training in Bakau will make the Gambian squad for the Bissau encounter.

"The move is a good one and it is in line with our plans to register in the first ever WAFU championship for the female category to commence soon," he stated.

The team is expected to leave Banjul for Bissau on Friday March 6th 2009.
