National Cricket League Commences

The 2008/9 five- team national cricket league kicked off on Saturday, December 13th, 2008 at the July 22nd Square in Banjul.

Wallidan, Jewel of India, GPA, Veterans and Asia 11 are the teams battling for this year's title.

The opening game, played over the weekend between Wallidan and Jewel of India, demonstrated that both teams are equal contenders and solid sides to watch.

The game, played at the July 22nd Square on Saturday, went in favour of the Jewel of India who scored 167 runs and won by five wickets.

Wallidan fielded first after winning the toss and elected to field.

When they took over the bat they scored 164 runs in 30 overs.   Despite not winning, Wallidan's Moses Bahoum was instrumental in registering most of the runs. He opened his account this year with 63 runs on Saturday.

Vicky Shannon of the Jewel of India side was crowned the man of the match. He recorded 30 runs.

Johnny Gomez, president of The Gambia Cricket Association said each team will play 12 matches in the five-team league and the overall winner with the highest points will be crowned winner of the league.

He pointed out that registration is open for veteran players who are interested in taking part in league. The cricket boss added that trophies would be available to league champions, best scorer, best bowler and the best all rounder.

Matches are played on Saturday's and Sundays and as part of the weekend games, GPA will take on the Veterans on Saturday, while Sunday's game will feature the Jewel of India against Asia 11.
