Nation Wide Volleyball Tourney Set For July 17

Wednesday, July 01, 2009

As part of activities marking the July 22nd anniversary celebration, the Gambia Volleyball Association will stage a 5-day nationwide volleyball championship, slated for July 17th 2009 in Banjul.

A total of 16 teams, including both male and female categories are expected to take part in this volleyball championship.

"We have written to the entire regions in the country and the teams that are expected to participate in the tournament are on the alert. We are expecting teams from Bakau, Banjul, a combination of Serrekunda East and West, LRR, NBR, CRR, URR  and Western Region," the President of the Gambia Volleyball Association, Musa Casa Taal told Pointsport yesterday.

He went on to state that the July 22nd championship is like a pilot project for associations to organise their national league throughout the country. He also seized the opportunity to call on aspiring clubs to register with the volleyball association.

"The Gambia Volleyball Association is ready to participate in the forthcoming Zone II Volleyball Tournament, scheduled to take place in Guinea Conakry later this year, to be funded by the National Sports Council,"

"The intensity of our challenges which includes lack of strategic sponsorship partnership has been the biggest constraints which the association is working very hard to overcome in order to realise our ambitions, such as the running of a successful national league," the Volleyball President   pointed out.

Meanwhile, the volleyball President also announced that the Zone II annual general meeting which was scheduled to take place on 17th and 18th July 2009, has been deferred to September, due to logistical arrangements.

As part of the National Volleyball league, Taal urged all clubs to come forward to register with the association with an amount pegged at D5, 000.
