Human Rights training for journalists ends

The training on Human Rights for Journalists which started on 12 December 2014 at the Gambian Telecommunications and Multimedia Institute ended on 14 December 2014. It was organized by the Gambia Press Union.

During the opening of the training course, Jibairu Janneh, GPU Secretary General, made brief remarks.

The resources person, Lawyer Gaye Sowe, during his presentation, dwelt on the genesis, concepts and components of human rights; an overview of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights; Human Rights Law and international frameworks; overview of The Gambia constitutional provisions on Human Rights; overview of The Gambia legal instruments on Human Rights; and importance of Human Rights in a Democracy.

Participants also engaged in group work on why journalists should contribute to human rights, and why human rights issues should be considered in journalism.
