GNOC Hails President Jammeh

The 11th Sports Banquet and Award Ceremony held this year at the Paradise Suites Hotel, received a colossal moral and financial support from President Yahya A.J.J Jammeh, and as a result the GNOC is in no small way commending the sports enthusiast for encouraging not only sports associations, but also individuals who otherwise do not take part in sports; and also committing his own personal resources to the promotion of initiatives associated with sports.

Among these gestures include inter-department sports, parastatal and the parliament football matches. These are initiatives taken by him to encourage and promote participation in sports.

Some of the major interventions taken by President Jammeh include the sponsorship of 16 events of the May Day Sport, and May Day trophies. He also donated D250,000 to the organisers of May Day Sports, the financial merit package of twenty-nine million Dalasi (D29,000,000) to the Gambia Under-17 team as African champions and to the coaching staff, the creation of sports development fund, which was source of financing of the qualifying round of the senior national football team CAN and  World Cup 2010 campaign and bonus payments, the payment of salary and accommodation for the National Team coach, Mr. Paul Put, donation of US$31, 119 for the development of cricket in The Gambia, and many other interventions.

In this regard the GNOC recognised President Jammeh's invaluable and tremendous support to sports. The GNOC, in light of these support measures by the President, expressed the greatest honour to award the sponsorship for sports award 2009 to His Excellency President of the Republic of The Gambia, Professor Alhaji AJJ Jammeh.

Since there was a tie at 1st position between the Police and Army, both sides received D115, 000 each. Prisons at third position collected D55,000 Immigration collected D45,000 in fourth place. The Most Disciplined team trophy was won by Gambia Revenue Authority, and the best dressed team was won Standard Chartered Bank.

Other awards presented were: The GNOC president's award which went to Mr. Alieu Jeng, Most Outstanding sports personality award to Ms. Jabou Jawo, GNOC sponsorship for sports award won by H.E Professor Alhagie Dr. Yahya AJJ Jammeh. Hall of Fame awards went to Mr. Mam Essa Gaye, Mr. Matarr Jarju, Ms. Adama Njie. The Merit list award went to Mr. Sam Osseh Coker, Mr. Bambo Fatty, Mr. Babou Jangum, Mr. Abdoulie Sallah and Ms. Amira Jagne, and the Posthumous merit award went to Mr. Sebastian Manga, Jegan Njie, Mr. Babou Mbye, Mr. Sega Jobe and Pa Matarr Drammeh.

Both the President and the Vice President were represented at the award ceremony.
