The Gambia Football Association (GFA) on Monday presented sets of jerseys to 24 female football clubs as part of their procedure to develop, promote and encourage female football in the country.

The presentation ceremony was held at the GFA House in Kanifing.

Speaking at the ceremony, Abdou Salaam Jammeh, Assistant Secretary General of the Gambia Football Association and a Caf Development Officer, said the gesture was aimed at motivating and encouraging female football in the country.

The GFA SG added: “The gesture is also part of the GFA’s efforts in fulfilling the promise they made to the teams.”

Salaam said further that the money spent on the materials was part of Fifa’s financial assistance to the GFA purely designed to develop, promote and encourage female football in the country.

Seedy M.B. Kinteh, president of the GFA, said the donation would help the GFA to maintain a strong female national team that can represent the country in various qualifying rounds and other competitions.

The GFA supremo, who is understood to be leaving for Germany to attend the Female World Cup final as well as a symposium on the development of women football, noted that the conference will give them the opportunity to voice out the problems female football is faced with as the country sets its sight on promoting female football.

Mr Kinteh noted that they have been making such presentations for quite a while over the years to encourage female football in The Gambia.

He says he is confident that the donation would help the country to maintain a strong national team that can represent the country in qualifiers and other competitions, to follow the footsteps of other female national teams that are taking part in World Cup and other female championships.

Kadijatou Jatta, head coach of Red Scorpions, said the gesture came at a time “it is highly needed”.

She used the occasion to thank the donors for their timely gesture, saying the donation would serve as a motivation for all the teams that have benefited from it.

“The Gambia Football Association (GFA) is really doing well in helping female football,” she stated, urging the private sector to also contribute their quota in the promotion of female football in the country.

Mam Jarra Dahaba delivered the vote of thanks on the occasion.
