Gamtel/Gamcel Volleyball Team has made numerous achievements, after putting up good performances in both the May Day and the National Volleyball League Competitions this year.

Speaking in an interview with Pointsport about development at the Gamtel telegraph office in Banjul, the president of Gamtel/Gamcel Inter-departmental Sports Association, Kalilu Bayo, alias KC, said Gamtel/Gamcel sports team has taken the lead in both the volleyball and football championships, noting that during last year’s May Day Volleyball competition for companies the Gamtel /Gamcel Volleyball male team emerged as champions while their female team was crowned runners-up.

In this year’s National Volleyball League their male team won the championship and in the female category the female team were also crowned the champions, Mr Bayo said, adding that as a result of these achievements, in June this year two of their female players and male were selected by the National Volleyball Association to join the Gambia National Volleyball team to participate in a beach volleyball competition in Freetown.

He noted that during the competition two of their players performed extremely well, which earned them a qualification berth to the All Africa Games being played currently in Mozambique.

Four of their players have been selected to represent The Gambia in the All Africa Games, he said, adding: “The team is already in Mozambique participating in the Games.”

Apart from volleyball Gamtel/Gamcel football team has also participated in the eighth edition of the National Interdepartmental Sports Association (NISA) Football Championship, he noted, saying the team went up to the quarterfinals before they were eliminated by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Football Team.

Mr Bayo noted that all these achievements came through the good leadership of the dynamic acting-managing director of Gamtel, Babucarr Sanyang, who has given them the encouragement backed by financial support and the good work of the sports executives and players of Gamtel/Gamcel.

He assured Gamtel/Gamcel’s management that both the volleyball and football teams “will always live up to expectations and are ready to deliver the desired results”.
