Gambia Under-17 Pick First Vital Points

Friday, March 20, 2009

The Gambia Under-17 Darling Scorpions won the first match of the 8th Edition of the CAF U-17 Championships in Algeria by defeating Guinea Conakry 1-0.

The Gambia's goal was scored by Real de Banjul striker, Ebrima Bojang, in the 7th minute of the second half.

The Gambian team during the first half posed lots of threats to the young Sylli National in their 18 yard box, but the Guinean players did not give them space to penetrate the defence line. Before the goal was scored, Ebrima Bojang, Abdou Njie, Lamin Samateh, and Pateh Nyang, missed golden opportunities, likewise Guinea's Ebrima Soury Camara the danger man in the Guinean striking force.

In the dying minutes of the game, Gambia's Lamin Samateh was shown the first yellow card of the tournament.

The Baby Scorpions will now meet the 2003 champions, Cameroon, on Sunday.

In the second game of the opening day, the host country Algeria beat Cameroon 1-0. Cameroon during the second half of the game equalised but the goal was rejected by the Ghanian, referee Joseph Lamptey.

It is also worth noting that the Algeria and Cameroon match was commissioned by our own Gambian veteran, Alhagie O.B.Conateh.

After sailing past Guinea, The Gambia U-17 will wrap up their group matches with host Algeria on Wednesday 25th March 2009.

In Group B matches today, Zimbabwe will take on Burkina Faso while Niger will clash with Malawi.
