The Gambia national U-20 team has started intensive training session ahead of the 2017 African U-20 Youth Championship qualifiers against Sierra Leone in April 2016, at the FIFA Goal Project in Old Yundum on Monday.

The Darling Scorpions under the guidance of head coach Omar Sise are currently training with 28 players to scout out good players that will represent the country in the upcoming African U-20 Youth championship qualifiers against Shooting Stars of Sierra Leone.

The Gambia eliminated Sierra Leone in the 2011 African U-20 Youth Championship after beating them 4-1 on aggregate in the qualifiers before edging past Ivory Coast in their final qualifier berth 2-0 on aggregate courtesy of midfielder Saihou Gassama under the guidance of the late coach Lamin Sarr.

But the Darling Scorpions were eliminated in the group after their woeful performance in the group stage, as they failed to qualify for the 2009 African U-20 Youth Championship after losing to Ghana 3-2 on aggregate in the qualifiers under the guidance of the late coach Lamin Sarr.

The Gambia made their debut in the African U-20 Youth Championship in 2007, hosted in Congo Brazza Ville after eliminating Mali 2-1 in the qualifiers and won bronze medal after beating Zambia 3-1 in the third playoff under the guidance of head coach Peter Bonu Johnson.

The Gambia also made their debut in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2007, hosted in Canada but were eliminated in the second round by Austria 2-1 under the guidance of head coach Peter Bonu Johnson.
