Disaster Ward Management Committees trained

At least 35 participants drawn from three wards within the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) recently took part in a two-day training workshop on National Disaster Management Act/Policy, held at the New Jeshwang Health Centre.

The objectives of the training was to ensure that Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategies are shared with the communities.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency's Cordinator for KMC, Mrs. Binta Sey Jadama, the trained committee members will serve as mouthpiece in their respective communities by sensitising people on Disaster Risk Reduction, and utilising their own resources before and during disaster.

Mrs. Jadama said the disaster ward management committees are directly under the KMC Disaster Management Committee. She said this is the first time when the disaster ward management committees in KMC have been trained on the agency's Act/Policy, adding that they are the existing ward development committee members who now double as disaster ward management committee members.

She said the purpose of maintaining the ward development committees is not to create parallel committees, but to continue with the existing ward development committees. She said KMC Disaster Management Committee would supervise the ward disaster management committees for the successful implementation of their activities within the region.

At the end of the training, the trainees recommended that they should be certified and be issued with disaster ID cards.

Participants from Ebo Town and Kotu Quarry called for more water tanks in their areas, while participants from Abuko complained of water tank low pressure.
