Comium Gambia Limited, one of the leading GSM operators in the country will effective this Sunday 5th July, 2009, launch a football tournament, called the Comium Smile Tournament at the Palma Rima Beach Hotel.

Being the first of its kind in the history of the Gambia's GSM industry, the Comium Smile Tournament is a 6-A side beach football tournament which will feature 32 teams over a six-week period in a knock-out tournament.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Comium Head Office on Wednesday 1st July, Nyang Njie,  Comium's Sales Manager said the objective of the tournament is to pave an avenue for kids to engage in some meaningful leisure and entertainment.

According to the Comium Sales Manager, the winner of the six-week tournament will go with gold medals and a cash price of D100, 000; D50, 000 and silver medals for the first runner-up and D25, 000 each, for the two semi-finalists. He said other participating teams will also be given Comium's promotional items during the competition.

Comium, he said, already believed that the tournament will be a success because of the large number of teams that had already registered for the competition. He expressed Comium's resolve to make the tournament an annual event.

On the registration, he stated that any person or organisation can register for the tournament by just visiting any Comium Customer Care to register a team name and contact person number. He added that all teams will be placed in a raffle draw today Friday, 3rd July, 2009 and 32 teams will be drawn for the tournament proper.

Mr. Njie further stated that each team will have a total of 10 squad members (6 on the field and 4 reserves), all of whom, he said must have a Comium line.

On the security aspects, he said that Comium is working with the Gambia Tourism Authority and the Tourist Security Unit, to provide security and lightening at the beach. He also added that they will be involving professional referees so as to avoid any bias.

Meanwhile, the registration for the tournament ended yesterday evening.
