Brikama United snatch 1st victory in GFA 1st Division

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

The 2010-2011 Gambia Football Association division one league champions, Brikama United, have registered their first win in the 2011-2012 GFA division one league following their hard-fought 1-0 victory over debutant Serrekunda United in the Week 3 fixtures played at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium on Sunday.

It was a crunch clash with both sides playing defensive and offensive football as they caused series of assaults in front of each other’s goal mouth.

Brikama United opened the score through striker Foday Trawally in the 66th minute of the game with a superb header, from Alieu Jatta’s cross, to give Brikama United the lead, which eventually proved to be the winner and first victory for them in the new season.

Serrekunda United fought back for an equaliser and created several goal-scoring opportunities. Lamin Demba and John Mendy could have levelled the score for Serrekunda United in the 78th and 82nd minutes of the game but those scoring opportunities were denied by Brikama United goalkeeper Baboucarr Sanyang.

Malick Kujabi could have also levelled the score for Serrekunda United in the 85th minute of the game when he sent a powerful long range shot but it went away, thus the game ended 1-0 in favour of Brikama United.

Wallidan were able to snatch their first point in the season after a goalless draw against promoted side Hawks at the Independence Stadium in Bakau the same day.

Elsewhere, the FA and Super Cup champions Gamtel drew 1-1 with Young Africans in the other Week 3 fixtures played at the Banjul KG5 Mini-stadium.
