As part of their corporate social responsibility, BERNER Medical Ansell based in Karlstad, Sweden, on 31st May donated 2 cartons of surgical masks, 35 cartons of surgical gowns and 54 cartons of surgical gloves to the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) in Banjul.

The presentation was made through Dr Pa Babucarr Foon - a practising surgeon and specialist in obstetrics, gynecology and general medicine in Sweden.

BERNER Medical is a Swedish-based company that sells surgical items to the public. It is a private health institutions headquartered in Malmo, Sweden, with distribution centres in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the representative of BERNER Medical, Fatou Barry-Faye, said the donation is intended for the women’s wing of the RVTH.

“The donation is part of fulfilment of his social responsibility of giving back to the people and the nation,” Ms Faye said.

She noted that BERNER Medical plans to continue to support the Gambian health sector and will endeavour to make subsequent assistance to the sector.

Babucarr Ngum, Public Relations Officer of the RVTH on behalf of the hospital board, is very happy for such a gesture, noting that the donation could not have come at a better time than now.

In any hospital work there is great use of things like gloves for protection, she said. “We therefore need gloves in all work,” he added.

“We know government alone cannot do it; so therefore we need the intervention of other Gambians abroad or even institutions and members of the private sector, etc,” he said.

This is not the first time Dr. Foon has rendered such gesture to the RVTH.

“Before today’s donation Dr. Foon had donated gynaecology materials to the hospital and we are still using those materials so we are very grateful to him and BERNER Medical,” he noted.
