The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court yesterday heard the testimony in the drug case involving one Momodou Njie, who was charged with being in possession of prohibited drug.

Matty M. Janneh told the court she is a narcotics control officer and she recognised the accused person.

She said that on 17 April 2012, she was assigned to obtain both the cautionary and voluntary statements from the accused person, which she did in the presence of an independent witness by the name Lamin Minteh.

Officer Janneh added that she read the cautionary wording to the accused in the local language before recording the statement, which the independent witness signed and she also endorsed it.

She said the same procedure was followed in obtaining the voluntary statement, adding that the accused was later charged with the offence committed.

She said the accused thumb-printed the statement and the independent witness signed.

Hearing is adjourned until 4 September 2012.
