Julakay Discharged

The Banjul Magistrates' Court on Monday discharged Ansumana Marena (alias Julakay), Managing director of Julakay Construction and Engineering Company, following the prosecution's application under S. 68 (1) to withdraw the case.

Prosecuting Officer, ASP Touray, pointed out,  " We want to put our house in order and anytime we are ready we will come back." The defence did not object to the application.

It will be recalled that Ansumana Marena was standing trial at the Banjul Magistrates' Court in two separate cases.

In the first case he was charged with stealing, and the particulars of the offence state that Ansumana Marena in December 2003 at Arab Gambia Islamic Bank (AGIB) in the city of Banjul stole the sum of D13,587,782.41 the property of Julakay Construction and Engineering Company limited.

In the second case, he was charged with stealing, uttering false document and making a false document.

On count one, the particulars of the offence revealed that in the month of January 2006, in the city of Banjul and diverse places the accused stole a motor vehicle L 200, Mitsubishi with registration number BJL 4695B, valued at D600, 000 the property of Julakay Construction and Engineering Company limited.

On count two, the offence indicates that Ansumana Marena on 18th January 2006 at Julakay Construction and Engineering Company in the Kanifing Municipality, prepared a document dated 18th January 2006 and addressed to the Inspector General of Police which he knew to be false or does not believe to be true.

And on count three, the particulars of the offence state that Ansumana Marena on 18th January 2008 at Julakay Construction and Engineering Company limited, knowingly and fraudulently presented a false document dated 18th January 2006 to the licensing Authority and with the intention that it will be acted upon as genuine.

In a separate but related development, Ansumana Marena's case at the Kanifing Magistrates' Court was also withdrawn following the police prosecutor Sub-Inspector Sanyang's application to withdraw the matter. The reason for the withdrawal, according to the prosecutor, was for the prosecution to put its house in order.

At the Kanifing Magistrates' Court, Ansumana Marena was charged with stealing the following: 88 pairs of toilet tanks, 50 pairs of toilet seats, 80 pairs of wash hand basins, 57 pieces of sheet covers, 14 rolls of conduits, 9 cartons of fluorescent (4F), 50 pieces of wash hand basins, 50 complete set toilet seats and 51 pieces of other fittings, valued at D4.5 M, the property of Julakay Construction and Engineering Company.
