Gamtel Taken to Court

Gambia Telecommunications Company (Gamtel) has been sued by its former employee, Haddijatou Forbes-Ceesay, for general damages. The case was mentioned before Magistrate Kayode of Banjul Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

The plaintiff, Haddijatou Forbes-Ceesay, is claiming from the defendant the sum of D250,000.00 as general damages for pain and suffering arising out of the negligence of the defendant and/or its agent at an interest rate of 25% and cost.

According to the facts of the claim, at all material time the plaintiff was an employee of the defendant, having worked for the defendant from February 1992 to August 2007, when she voluntarily resigned from the service of the defendant. The claim added that some time in 2006, the plaintiff received medical attention at both Kololi clinic and RVTH after which she was recommended for overseas treatment.

It continued that the plaintiff applied for medical loan from the defendant to finance her overseas trip, adding that the defendant referred the plaintiff to Alliance Insurance Company for assessment. The insurance company recommended that the plaintiff seek treatment in Senegal, which the defendant accepted.

It further revealed that the insurance company failed or refused to give approval to the recommendation for overseas treatment out of negligence, thus resulting to the worsening of the plaintiff's medical condition.

The case was adjourned for further hearing.
