An Ivorian refugee representative recently told the relevant
authorities to take their issues seriously or they'll report to Geneva. Francis Loua, the
spokesperson for Ivorian refugees in The Gambia, pointed out to the refugee
authorities, in the presence of the UNHCR, Immigration, GAFNA and the Red Cross
that they are not being taken seriously.
He said, "since francophone refugees are in The Gambia working
for us it has been difficult. No food is given and as well as lodging and
medication.
Francis said that Sekou Saho, head of the UNHCR and Fatou
Barry, the protection officer, have said that they will help Ivorian refugees
but, to our great surprise, said again that, 'medical assistance is not
possible for all .' Our question is why? Why are we treated unfairly?"
He continued saying, "If they do not listen to us, if there
is no change this month, we are going to write to Geneva to explain our problem in a better
way." The Senegalese are helped, why not us?"
Francis Loua asked the authorities for professional training
for Ivorian refugees living in Serrekunda and Brikama.
