africa » gambia
Monday, April 07, 2008
The Director of Operations of the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDEA) was the latest prosecution witness in the case of a Nigerian national currently under trial at a magistrates’ court in Western Region of The Gambia.

Sunday Amedi was arrested at The Gambia’s only international airport in July of 2007 when a narcotic drug officer grew suspicious that he was carrying something illegal with him.

Commissioner Ousman Sanneh recently told the Brikama Magistrates’ Court that he was among officers who were present when doctors were x-raying Sunday at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in Banjul. He added that he was also at the NDEA headquarters when Sunday ejected 68 pellets of cocaine.

Earlier, Sanneh told the court that the suspect was arrested in July of last year. ‘ While at home on 28thJuly 2007, I received a call from Neneh Sowe-Janneh that she had arrested eight Nigerians whom she suspected of carrying illegal substances in their stomachs. Sunday was part of the eight that were arrested,’ recounted Sanneh.

The case, presided over by magistrate Edrisa Mbai, continues.
