The Foundation for Disabled People, The Gambia has donated 16 wheelchairs to their beneficiaries in a ceremony held at their office in Banjul recently.

Opesan Kehinde Gabriel, the Director of the foundation, explained that the foundation has existed for seven years. He said, "The foundation is a charitable organisation with the sole aim of supporting the Gambian Government in the area of social welfare by alleviating the mobility problem of the physically challenged".

He said that the Lord Mayor Brian Howard of Haslemere, United Kingdom, sponsored the 16 wheelchairs presented in commemoration of his first anniversary in office, with the support of the Pageant Charity based in the UK.

The Director urged the disabled people of The Gambia find ways to enable themselves because "disability is not inability". He went on to say that his foundation was expecting 12 more wheelchairs from their partners in the UK.

The Pageant Charity donated sewing machines to disabled people. Anne Keating, a member of the charity stated, "Pippa Howard and I are the founders of the charity and I am a sister to the Mayor who donated to the disabled foundation".
