Tuesday, March 25, 2008

In an extraordinary congress held last Saturday, members of Gambia Press Union (GPU) elected in a new executive to steer the affairs of the union for the next three years. The congress, the fifth of its kind, witnessed the election of the following into the new executive: Mrs. Ndey Tapha Sosseh, Mr. Emil Touray, Mrs. Sarata Jabbi-Dibba, Momodou Nyang, Madi Njie, Pa Modou Faal, Buya Jammeh, Lamin Njie and Amie Sanneh.

The elections into the new executive saw the former Secretary-General, Ndey Tapha Sosseh, taking charge as the President, Mrs. Sarata Jabbi-Dibba as First Vice President, Momodou Nyang Second Vice President, Emil Touray, the former Assistant Secretary-General, as the new Secretary General while Lamin Njie and Madi Njie took charge as First and Second Secretary-General respectively. Pa Modou Faal has taken charge as Treasurer while Buya Jammeh and Amie Sanneh are to serve as co-opted members.

Mrs. Ndey Tapha Sosseh, the newly elected President of the Union, replaces Mr. Madi Ceesay who stepped down as President after three years in the helm of affairs.

The new executive is, among other things, expected to pilot the affairs of The Gambia Press Union for the next three years by actively defending and protecting the welfare of Gambian journalists.

The Gambia Press Union, established in 1979 by some great Gambian journalists including the late Deyda Hydara, Co-founder of The Point newspaper, today has a total membershipof 166.

Details of the status report by the Ex-Secretary General of the union and the Ex-President, including financial report and statement of account for the past three years, will be carried in our subsequent editions.
