Nasir Ahmadiyya Senior Secondary Celebrates Silver Jubilee in Basse

NasirAhmadiyyaMuslimSeniorSecondary School recently celebrated their Silver Jubilee ceremony at the School grounds. The celebration, which was attended by dignitaries and stakeholders in Upper River Region, took the form of a singing and drama performance about teenage pregnancy by AMSA and peer health educators respectively. In the interlude the Press held a questions and answers session.

Speaking earlier, the principal of Nasir Ahmadiyya Muslim Senior Secondary School, Mr. Mamadi Ceesay, said that Nasir was established in October 1983 with a total enrolment of 83 students of which only eight 8 were girls. It was the first high school in the region and supported the government by increasing access to formal education to the people in the area.

Mr. Ceesay further spoke of the importance of celebrating the Silver Jubilee of Nasir as part of their commemoration of centenary Khalifat which gave to the scheme under which this great institution (Nasir) was established. According to Mr. Ceesay, Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama't is an Islamic religious organisation aimed at promoting health and education for the people of West Africa through the establishment of schools and hospitals.

Giving the history of the establishment of Nasir, Mr. Ceesay disclosed that Nasir came about as a result of the visit of Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad (ra) the third Khalifa of promised messiah and Imam Mahdi (as) who visited the Gambia in 1970. They had a dream to build schools and hospitals for not only The Gambia but for the people of West Africa.

According to Mr. Ceesay, Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at has successfully established four SeniorSecondary Schools' one UpperBasicSchool and two LowerBasicSchools at strategic places in the country to support the Gambian Government to increase access to educational services.

For the past decade the school has enjoyed infrastructural development and academic improvement and student enrolment increased to 960 of which 360 are girls.

He then commended the teachers and stakeholders for their untiring support to the school.

Asanatou Jallow, the head girl of the school, in her vote of thanks, commended the teachers for their hard work and the good will they have for the school and the students. She then renewed her assurance to the teachers that they will continue working hard and maintain a high sense of discipline at all times.

The celebration was marked by a volleyball competition between the students, teachers and the town team, which attracted thousands of spectators.

The ceremony was chaired by Mr. Barba Yarrah Daboh head of department for Arts.
