Abdoulie Njorr, a Senegalese butcher, was on Tuesday 30th September 2008 convicted and sentenced to a fine of D5000, in default to serve four months' imprisonment. Senior Magistrate Abdoulie Mbackeh of the Kanifing Magistrates' Court presided over the case.
The conviction followed the accused person's plea of guilt for selling a kilo of steak at D120 instead of the fixed price of D80.
Mr. Njorr begged the court to temper justice with mercy in his plea of mitigation.
However, Magistrate Abdoulie Mbackeh in his judgement maintained that the accused deserved some punishment to serve as a deterrent to others. He adduced that cheating during Ramadan is an abominable act. He stated that Ramadan is a holy month during which good Muslims ought to avoid sins. He said selling meat at an exorbitant price is wickedness.
He finally stated that the call for the reduction of price of meat was in the interest of the public.
Prosecutor 358 Sarr represented the IGP.
