The National Assembly Select Committee on Youth and Sports, under the chairmanship of Hon Alhagie Sillah, last Friday met the top officials of the Department of Youth and Sports at the National Assembly building in Banjul.

The reason for the meeting was for the officials of the Department to brief the committee about the state of preparedness about the forthcoming National youth conference and festival (Nayconf). The sporting infrastructures that were built across the country were also discussed with regard to whether they were handed over in a proper shape by the contractors to the Department after the end of their contracts.

Hon Sillah stated that the select committee on Youth and Sports has just been formed, adding that other national Assemblies were here but such a committee was never in place.

He added, "this committee is not a commission of enquiry or trying to witch hurt anybody, it is only trying to do its work."

He pointed out that at the end of their findings they make their recommendations, write a report on the way forward.

For his part, the deputy permanent Secretary Department of Youth and Sports, Abdoulie Kah, said the Department has got some problems that they inherited and some of the projects have been handed over but not to expectations. She added that the level of work is not good citing Basse mini stadium as an example.

DPS Kah said that most of the projects do not meet the right standard compared to the mini stadiums in the Great Banjul Area.

The next meeting is on the 12th of this month
