In a bid to ensure safety and smooth crossing at sea, The Gambia Maritime Administration (GMA) has donated 1000 life jackets to the Gambia Navy for use by passengers and boat captains plying on the busy sea crossing from Banjul to Barra.

The handing over ceremony was held at the Naval Command Base in Banjul and was attended by the deputy Chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces, senior Navy officers and staff from the Gambia Maritime Administration.

The move comes amid the recent difficulties commuters from Banjul and Barra face in crossing to their various destinations.

Presenting the items, Ousainou Touray, Deputy Director at The Gambia Maritime Administration, said the life jacket is a symbol of their commitment to the well-being of the people and other nationals crossing the Banjul-Barra.

“We aim to ensure that every journey undertaken by canoe transportation across the mouth of the river Gambia is safe.” he said.

According to him, the GMA allows only certified and licensed boats to operate at the landing sites in view of the fact that safety of citizens must always remain paramount, especially during times of increased demand and limited transportation options.

“We understand the challenges posed by the temporary halt in ferry services, but it is during such times of adversity that the strength of our resolve is tested. Let us rise to the occasion and demonstrate our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of our people.”

He urged all passengers and canoe operators in the area to cooperate fully with the Gambia Navy as they enforce the wearing of life jackets and other safety regulations before any sea crossings.

Executive Officer Gambia Navy, Captain Fatou Jaiteh said the life jackets would greatly help in safeguarding lives of individuals, considering the fact that in times of breakdown, life jackets are essential for effective service delivery.

Deputy Chief Defence Staff of The Gambia Armed Forces, Major General Ousman Gomez, while underscoring the longstanding cooperation between GMA and Navy in safeguarding life at sea, maintained that the availability of life jackets is crucial for effective and efficient service delivery.
