Magistrate Sanyang Toughens Towards Remand Prisoners
Thursday 28th September 2006

By Modou Sanyang

The Principal Magistrate of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, His Worship Kebba Sanyang, has stated that no remand prisoner would be allowed into his court without being put in handcuffs.

He made the warning last Wednesday when a group of remand prisoners were brought into court to stand trial. Magistrate Sanyang explained that bringing remand prisoners to court without handcuffs is unsafe to the court and to the public.

He went on to cite that one of the court room windows was broken by an aggressive accused person because he had not been put in handcuffs.

The prosecutors, for their part, informed the court that they did not have handcuffs made available to them and that the situation was beyond their control. They however promised to get in touch with their superiors so as to see how best the handcuffs could be provided for use on remand prisoners.
