Youth Forum: Youth Council conducts campaign for youth representation in local Councils

Tuesday, May 29, 2018

As part of their mandate to coordinate and advise government on issues of young people and to promote the development and welfare of youth, chairperson of The Gambia National Youth Council (NYC) and a team recently embarked on nationwide consultation meetings with regional and Area council authorities on the selection of youth representative in area councils.

Dembo Kambi and his team consultation was to engage the authorities on modalities of selecting youth representatives into the council in all regions and municipalities.

It was a successful consultation with all regional authorities all assuring NYC chairperson of honoring the request of the young people in leading the selection of their own representatives. Some Councils have given youth that opportunity to select their representatives into the council even before the visit of the chairperson.

There are set of criteria for any youth interested to serve as youth representative in any of the councils, including being a Gambian citizen, be under the ages of 15 –35 and be a native resident of the region or municipality.

It also emphasised that the person must have the ability to read and write, experience working with young people and fulfill the conditions of being a councilor as stated in the Local Government Act.

“We at NYC will remain committed to the development and empowerment of young people in the country. The NYC nationwide consolation tour to the area councils will enable the councils to work closely with youth towards the development of the country.”
