Thousands of wrestling enthusiasts on Sunday stormed the Independence Stadium in Bakau to watch Wrestler Leket Bu Barra defeat Manduar in a much anticipated combat.

Leket Bu Barra once more proved that he is the King of the Gambian wrestling arena after winning the bout against Manduar of Jeff Jell on referees’ decision.

Leket, as he is commonly called was declared the winner after several minutes of wrestling without a clear-cut winner. The bout was decided on which wrestler received more warnings from the referee.

Arguably one of the most organized and attended wrestling events staged in recent months, Alhagje Morr Jobe, founder of Ala Promotion reassured of his commitment to the promotion of wrestling in the country.

He described wrestling as one of the fastest growing sports with direct and indirect impact on the lives of many. “If you look at the Stadium today you will realize that not only are the wrestlers benefiting but even petty traders are gaining something.”

Leket Bu Barra said winning the game was not an easy combat for him as his opponent Manduar, the captain of the Gambia National Wrestling Team, said he was not ready to fight.

Buba Aye Sanneh, a protocol officer at the Gambian embassy in South Africa said such wrestling contests would motivate the youth and promote traditional sport in the country.

The Kombo Central former National Assembly Member, to whom the grand combat was dedicated, said the huge turnout shows that people are interested in wrestling, calling on government to invest more in the sport to promote the youth agenda.
