Bureau and Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), Tuesday conducted a day-long
capacity building and sensitisation for lady councilors and stakeholders on the
National Gender and Women Empowerment Policy (NGWEP).
The gathering aim to enable participants to identify their role and responsibilities and to build their capacities on advocacy and lobbying.
Fatoumatta Ceesay, Women Bureau programme officer for KM said one of the objectives of the sensitisation is to build strong relationship with partners to promote good working relationship and to strengthen capacity of the lady councilors to work towards socio-economic development.
Madam Ceesay further revealed that in the 2010 Women Act, the National Women Council is tasked to advice, monitor and report on issues pertaining to women and girls’ empowerment. “The council will also advice government regularly on women education and training and to ensure that proper measures are taken in mobilising women as equal partners in economic, social and cultural development in the Gambia.”
Bineh Marong, Lady Councilor and representative of KMC assured participants of their commitment to national duties and working towards the interest and benefit of the municipality, knowing the problems affecting their people.
Pateh Baldeh, President of Network of Gender Journalists for Women and Cultural Advancement (NoGJWCA)-The Gambia reiterated the need to advocate the issue of gender and governance, considering the gap between men and women in political dispensation.
